Since the formation of the Union by the Articles of Association in 1774 and the Declaration of Independence in 1776, through the ratification of the Constitution by the 13 Colonies in 1787-88 and civil war from 1861 to 1865, and ending with the admission by Congress of Alaska and Hawaii in 1959, it took 183 years for the United States of America to have the State membership it has today.
In 2020 a bill was put forward to provide for the admission of the State of Washington, D.C. into the Union after many years of a Statehood movement.
