On 22 May 2021, the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania officially launched its intention to prepare for and undertake the Population and Housing Census 2022.
The census was held on the 23 August 2022 and was the sixth census to be held in the country after the Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1964. The other census years were 1967, 1978, 1988, 2002 and 2012.
The maps below explore the population and buildings related data published in the October 2022 preliminary region level census results.
Regions
The United Republic of Tanzania consists of 31 regions.
Settled space
Populations and buildings are not evenly distributed across Tanzania, but rather concentrated in settled spaces.
GRID 3 Tanzania settlement extents where used to calculate the percentage of settled space per square kilometer within each region.
Settled space population and buildings densities were then calculated in addition to region densities.
Population
The preliminary census results record the total population of The United Republic of Tanzania as 61,741,120. The population growing by nearly 40% since 2012.

Calculating population density based upon settled space area gives a different perspective. Although possibly an overestimation compared with region densities, it may better reflect the populations’ lived experience.

Katavi region has more than doubled in population since 2012. Other regions have also seen a large population growth.
Buildings
The preliminary census results record the total number of buildings as 14,348,372. Building types are classified and defined under the Urban Planning Act 2018.

Again, a different perspective is given when calculating densities based upon settled area.
Residential buildings
The preliminary census results provide insight into residential building numbers, with 10,751,123 buildings having a residential address.
Region residential building percentage
Dodoma region has the lowest percentage of residential buildings per square kilometer.
The Dodoma Master Plan 1976 began the journey of Dodoma settlement from a 1890 colonial German settlement to national capital in 1996. Dodoma was given city status in 26 April 2018.
